Crohn’s and Colitis UK (NACC)

Crohn’s and Colitis are inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) which last a lifetime and for which there is no known cure.

Crohn’s and Colitis are Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD – not to be confused with Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS) which last a lifetime and for which there is no known cure. They can strike at any age but most commonly begin in young people. Around 240,000 people in the UK have these conditions and more are diagnosed each year.

Symptoms can include relentless diarrhoea; bleeding; severe pain; exhaustion; associated
inflammation of eyes, skin and joints and – in children – impaired growth. The impact on
education, work, social and family life can be devastating.

Crohn’s and Colitis is the major UK charity offering information and support to people affected by these conditions. Established in 1979 as a partnership between patients, their families, friends and the health professionals caring for them, our services include helplines, a wide range of printed and downloadable information, a website with a web forum for young people and local community groups that bring people together for mutual support. We also raise awareness,
campaign for better health care and fund vital research.

Supporting Crohn’s and Colitis UK means helping people in need

Julie’s story: Julie called our helpline because she was at her ‘wit’s end’ over her young son’s Crohn’s. ‘If you were nearer, I would hug you,’ she said, after receiving the information and support she needed. ‘Thank you, thank you, thank you!’

Nicola’s story: Too ill to work after her fifth operation, Nicola was
washing sheets by hand several times each week because sores around her colostomy bag were causing leaks. When she received a grant for a washing machine, she cried with relief.

Adam’s story: 13 year-old Adam received a grant for clothes after
medication made him gain weight very quickly. ‘Things were desperate,’ his mum said. ‘The illness had turned him into a lonely, isolated person who was almost housebound. The new clothes were a big step back into the outside world.’

Kathleen’s story: When Kathleen spoke to one of our trained helpline staff she was so depressed by her illness that she was considering suicide. ‘I am feeling more positive now,’ she said later. ‘I feel I owe my life to you.’

Your support will help up to continue helping thousands of people like Nicola, Julie, Adam and Kathleen every year.
